Mizuno's own optical illusion, the compact MP-53 hides away a staggering level of forgiveness. Ticking all the boxes required to be an MP model, the Grain Flow Forged MP-53 has the head size, playing profile, and top line to please the most demanding shot-makers. Though the Diamond Muscle design and "V" shaped Milled Pocket Cavity ensure a surprising level of stability from off center hits. An innovative CNC milled Pocket Cavity removes 14 grams of weight which is strategically redistributed around the cavity to achieve the largest sweet area ever in an MP iron, without impacting its versatility. The MP-53's distinctive Diamond Muscle ensures that greater forgiveness is not achieved at the cost of workability or feel. Created using Mizuno's Harmonic Impact Technology and extensively tested on tour, Diamond Muscle was identified as the prime solution to fine tune the MP-53's sound at impact. In line with its quest to package big iron forgiveness into a more appealing head-size, the MP-53 also boasts a 360° grind to lessen the effective width of sole and top edge. The shorter irons taper into a design similar to the smaller MP-63, with precision and control taking priority. The MP-53 is Grain Flow Forged at Mizuno's exclusive Hiroshima facility for exceptional feel and distance control.

A new diamond muscle designed and a milled pocket cavity have allowed Mizuno to add more forgiveness to a compact head. Mizuno have worked hard at the sound of the face at impact as this is directly related to feel. The pocket cavity removes 14 grams of weight and allows it to be redistributed around the cavity. The shorter irons progress into a muscle-back design for added control.

The Mizuno MP-53 irons will suit those who like classic Mizuno heads but need added forgiveness and/or anyone looking for a balance of forgiveness and workability.

This is the most forgiving and longest Mizuno MP iron ever released. This does not mean they are as forgiving as the JPX-Pro but the smaller head and thinner sole make them more workable. The new tuned heads didn't feel a great deal different compared to last year's MP-58, providing the same fantastic feedback. Compared with the MX-300 they are smaller but do not sacrifice any forgiveness.

Impressive forgiveness levels for such a compact head. The new sole grind makes the heads more workable.

Players seeking out forgiving clubs that are forged might be more tempted to go for the new JPX-800 Pro heads.

PGA Pro verdict

The finish was great, just as you would expect from Mizuno. The long irons really impressed me with the ease of use. This will be down largely to the progressive design often seen on these price point irons. Also, the short irons looked good from the top edge although perhaps a little deep in the face for me. The S300 shaft combined nicely with the head design and felt solid at impact (John Jacobs)

  I have played about a dozen rounds so far and after getting used to the Mizuno MP 53 Irons I would say they are a very good club. I picked up an average of 5 yards per club 6 through pitching wedge. The accuracy though is the bigger advantage from these irons.

  This is the perfect club if you are a low or mid handicap player that wants a little more forgiveness. The ball comes off very crisp and you can work it like a true blade or muscle back. I love the no-offset face and the thin profile. Leaves little to guess about when struck right.
