The Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Iron is a modern looking iron designed to give top golfers the control and feel they demand. The Big Bertha Diablo has been designed to offer elite players a classic style of iron that also offers enhanced forgiveness and workability. The forged clubhead combines a Carpenter steel face with a forged 1020 carbon steel body to offer the ultimate in distance, accuracy and control by increasing ball speed and shifting weight to the perimeter and sole of the club. The Callaway Big Bertha Diablo has a thin topline combined with a shorted blade and narrow sole to deliver the traditional aesthetics that they best players want.

The Callaway Big Bertha Diablo irons combine a premium forged head with the modern styling that is common to the whole Diablo range. The irons combine a 455 carpenter steel face, providing a higher ball speed and shifting weight to the perimeter of the club, with a 1020 carbon steel body that provides a level of feel and feedback that the elite golfer demands. Unlike the woods, which are aimed at all levels of player, Callaway say the Big Bertha Diablo irons are aimed at elite players who want to combine modern technology and styling with a traditional feel and design that includes a thin topline and shorter blade. Compared to the Callaway X-22 Tour irons the sole is a little thicker and the hosel a little longer which improves the Diablo’s playability. Callaway Golf is known for many things but it’s the Big Bertha brand upon which the entire company was founded, and almost two decades later, the name is as powerful and evocative as ever.

The blood red Diablo irons are the latest off-shoot of the Big Bertha brand and and are complimented by Diablo driver, fairways metals and hybrids to Diablo bags, gloves and even balls.

The Diablo driver has already proved itself to be the powerful sibling Callaway hoped it would be when it launched in Munich in October – long, loud and very aggressive – though it makes the inclusion of a premium, forged iron in the range somewhat puzzling.

While the rest of the Diablo line seems designed to appeal to the mid-range player looking for game-improvement clubs in a more exciting package, the Diablo irons are aimed squarely at the better player - not exactly the ethos that made the Big Bertha brand the champion of the game-improver.

According to Callaway, these irons have been designed for player seeking a traditionally styled club with ‘enhanced playability and performance’. Quite where they fit into a line-up of irons that already includes excellent single-figure player options such as the X-Forged or the X-22 Tour is a a mystery.

Big Bertha Diablo irons appear to be a combination of the two – no bad thing but why?

The marketing strategy and politics aside, there's little doubting the quality of these clubs.

Everything about the Diablo irons screams class, although with a price-tag that is getting up towards four-figures, you’d expect nothing less. Every iron in the set is very sleek and could certainly lay claim to being one of the best looking Callaway irons ever produced. But it is the performance-controlling elements that will really appeal to the better player.

With a narrow sole, shorter blade, thinner topline and minimal offset, the Diablo ticks all of the boxes for those in search of feel and workability.

The irons are forged from 1020 carbon steel but in order to improve the trajectory and distance, Callaway has included a strong and light 455 Carpenter Steel face that allows weight to be moved to the perimeter.

It might be a better-player's club but who couldn’t use a little help keeping it more stable at impact? It certainly works. At impact the clubs feel incredibly solid and the ball really flies off the face with plenty of zip.

These are massively powerful irons, with a combination of better ball speed and stronger lofts producing some serious distance. Thankfully, these extra yards aren’t at the expense of control. They might be long but they're not wild.

And that is the conundrum of the Diablo irons. Callaway's ‘Unleash Hell’ message might work with a driver but when it comes to a classy set of forged irons, it seems inappropriate. The proof however, is in the hitting and Diablo and the better player seems like a match made in heaven rather than hell.

  Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Iron makes good contact on almost every shot. It was a great callaway design. A little lofty but you cant really complain to much about that. very very forgiving clubs would recommend them to anyone especially new golfers

  I bought the Big Bertha irons and used them for about 6 months. They are good clubs but I didn't like the wide soles. so i went and traded them in for the X-22 and love them.

  From the look, it's funky design and large sole don't seem to be hard to hit. But, when you take the club at address you will slowly realize why it's designed for low handicapper. The cavity back design really helps to reduce the vibrations. Further more, it's soft body and hard face really promote a penetrating trajectory ball flight (play like FT-i irons). I played with the NSPRO stiff shaft and that makes the swing looks perfect as the light steel shaft works with the cavity back design and hard face. The result is forgiving! forgiving! forgiving! Unbelievably forgiving for a player's iron. The only draw back is workability. Compared to the X22 tour, I have to put some effort in to shape the short. However it's just the matter of time on the range.

  I purchased this Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Irons for a friend of mine who consistently hits 300 yard irons. He's a lefty and is only 5'8" He's had several different irons from different manufacturers and hits them all long and it was no different with the Callaway Diablo. So if you're one of the lucky one's who can "rip it" you probably won't miss a beat with this club. For myself, I'm usually 50 yards behind his irons.
