Since the original Taylormade R9 Driver in 2009, there have been several R9 driver models, each offering some upgrades from the previous model. Each model driver will be listed along with its main features and also real reviews to help you make the right decision when your ready to pull the trigger and purchase your very own Taylormade R9 driver.
So what different models are available now? In all, there are now 7 R9 models available. We will list them below in the most common ways that you can find them named online, as well as with pictures of each model.
The FCT feature stands for Flight Control Technology, which is when you unscrew the shaft, twist it to the setting you want, and then screw it back into the clubhead. There are 4 main options, L, R, N, NU, with 4 more options in between for a total of 8. We will describe below what effect the FCT settings have on the face angle, lie, loft when the clubhead is square at impact, and the trajectory bias.
The MWT feature, which has been around since the R7 Quad, is Taylormade’s Moveable Weight Technology. The R7 Quad had 4 weights that you could adjust although the R9′s only have 3 weights since you can also use FCT technology to move the trajectory of the ball. The R9 drivers come with two 1 gram and one 16 gram weights. We will describe below what effect the positions of these weights have on your trajectory.
The combination of TaylorMade Flight Control Technology and Movable Weight Technology make theTaylorMade R9 Driver the only totally adjustable driver on the market!
Use the built-in Flight Control Technology to change the face angle, lie angle and loft of your R9 Driver to affect side-to-side flight by up to 40 yards. There are a total of eight different clubhead positions. Utilize TaylorMade's Moveable Weight Technology to change the CG (center of gravity) location to affect side-to-side flight by up to 35 yards.
Inverted cone geometry in a classic head shape of R9 Driver helps to ensure fast ball speed and big distance even on off-center hits while offering both traditional and modern lines in a stunning driver head.
The sophisticated high-inertia tip of the Fujikura Motore F1 65-gram low-torque graphite shaft promotes faster ball speed.
MWT Instructions and Trajectory Bias for Each Weight Configuration
Taylormade’s MWT technology basically uses simple physics by adding more weight to certain areas of the clubhead to affect trajectory. The MWT feature is to be used on top of the FCT technology to increase trajectory bias even more than what you see above in the FCT chart instructions.
The simple logic behind moving the trajectory bias from left to right and vice versa is as follows. If you add more weight to the heel of the club you can expect the toe of the club to be lighter and thus it will close faster through impact providing more of a draw bias or right to left trajectory. If you add more weight to the toe of the club, the toe will close slower through impact and the result is a fade bias or left to right trajectory. Now unless you have more weight available you won’t have to worry as much about the weights affecting the height of your shots, but if you do the weights affect the height in the following way. The more weight you put towards the front of the golf club the lower the ball will fly since you’re essentially moving the CG (center of gravity) closer towards the face. Whereas, the more weight you put in the back-center of the clubhead, the higher your trajectory will be since you’re moving the CG further back. This would also increase your spin rate as well.
So with the above FCT & MWT instructions you should be able to easily fit yourself so that your R9 driver is completely optimized for your golf swing. The idea is to setup your driver so that you do not have to make any swing changes to hit the exact shot you want with your driver, whether it be a small draw or slight fade. This will promote maximum accuracy as well as maximum distance with your R9 Driver.
TaylorMade R9 Driver Features:
- TaylorMade Flight Control Technology (FCT) lets you change the face angle, loft and lie
- Movable Weight Technology (MWT) of TaylorMade R9 Driver lets you change the clubhead's center of gravity
- FCT and MWT together offer total adjustability to promote up to 75 yards of side-to-side trajectory change
- New classic clubhead shape combines super-high MOI(Moment of Inertia) and easy-launching CG position
- Fujikura Motore 65-gram shaft with High Inertia Tip (H.I.T.) technology promotes faster ball speed
TaylorMade R9 Driver is Christian Cevear's club and it made him wins the European Open on 1st,Jun,2009.
R9 Driver vs. R9 460 Driver Comparison
Compared to the 420cc R9 driver, the R9 460 driver driver has a larger head (460cc), deeper clubface and lower and deeper-back center of gravity (CG), qualities that deliver a higher MOI for greater forgiveness and a higher spin-rate, helping low-spin players keep the ball in the air longer for increased carry and distance. “In addition to the advantages of FCT in a 460cc clubhead, the R9 460 also delivers the kind of shape, feel and sound that TaylorMade drivers are famous for, and which our competitors can’t come close to matching,” said Harry Arnett, TaylorMade senior category director for metalwoods. The shape is what TaylorMade calls “new classic” because it is at once modern and traditional. The R9 460′s new classic shape offers three distinct advantages: 1) it allows for a deep back, far-from-the-face CG location that makes it easier to launch the ball; 2) it contributes to a higher MOI for greater stability on off-center hits; 3) it allows for an exceptionally low CG location. The R9 460 driver is long in length – 45.75″ – and equipped with an Aldila RE*AX 60-gram tip-soft shaft. The characteristics of the shaft and the club’s added length together promote increased clubhead speed and distance. The R9 460 does not feature Taylormade’s MWT technology as the weights are glued in, so you get slightly less customization options for moving the trajectory left and right.
So what does this all mean? Well these drivers have slightly different player profiles and it basically boils down to a few main differences. The R9 driver will work best for the slightly better player who wants more customization and flight control options. It will enable you to tinker a bit more with your trajectory, give you more workability, and also a lower spin rate. The R9 460 will work best for the players who want maximum forgiveness and distance on mis-hits. It also helps raise the launch angle, which is great for golfers with a slightly slower swing speed so they can maximize distance.
R9 Driver vs. R9 SuperTri Driver Comparison
The original R9 driver used both adjustable face technology (FCT) and adjustable weight positioning technology (MWT) but only in a 420cc head. The reduction in forgiveness in the R9 was noticeable for those used to the larger heads. The follow up R9 460 had the adjustable face technology but Taylormade could not quite manage to add in the moveable weights that has been so successful for Taylormade since its introduction in the R7 to a larger 460cc head. The result of the R9 SuperTri driver is the first time Taylormade has combined adjustable face technology and adjustable weight positioning technology in a 460cc head which is huge. The larger head is more forgiving, and its CG (center of gravity) is two millimetres further back in the head than the R9 driver, making it easier to launch the ball higher and with more spin, helping players gain more distance. So what does Taylormade say about the R9 SuperTri driver? “The R9 SuperTri was made possible by two crucial developments by Taylormade engineers that saved enough weight to allow FCT and MWT to co-exist in a 460cc head. The first is better, more widespread use of Taylormade’s Ultra-Thin Wall technology throughout the clubhead. The second is a new, lighter FCT sleeve that does everything the former one did while weighing three grams less. “ The R9 SuperTri is equipped with a Fujikura Motore 60-gram shaft, which is five grams lighter than the Motore 65 used in the R9 driver. In addition to being lighter, the Motore 60 makes it easier to launch the ball on a higher launch angle and at a higher spin-rate, which helps many players achieve longer carry for increased distance.
So what all does this do for the golfer? Well the R9 SuperTri’s 460cc head opens the gate for higher handicap golfers to play the R9 without losing any forgiveness. This means that the R9 SuperTri will have a larger sweet spot than the original R9 driver. Both drivers have the same customization options with their FCT and MWT features so the decision really boils down to whether or not you want a 420cc head or a 460cc head with a bit of extra forgiveness. For golfers who want more workability, go with the original R9 driver. For golfers who need every ounce of forgiveness and distance they can get, then lean towards the R9 SuperTri. The last difference is the general aesthetics and look of the drivers. The SuperTri has the black finish on the sole whereas the original R9 has the polished chrome finish on the sole.
R9 SuperTri Driver vs. R9 Superdeep TP Driver Comparison
The R9 SuperDeep driver looks very similar to the R9 SuperTri driver, but it is designed to optimize the game of slightly better players. ”If you go back a little ways in our driver line, back to the 510 Tour, it’s got that type of head shape,” says Paul Loegering, one of TaylorMade’s PGA Tour reps. The face is not as wide as the R9 SuperTri’s but it is much taller. “For better players, it will produce less spin. They will be able to play a driver with more loft, but that doesn’t create more spin.” That should translate into more distance, but less forgiveness. “It’s not going to have the high MOI (Moment of Interia) of the SuperTri,” Loegering says, but this type of player isn’t really looking for that.” Whereas the R9 SuperTri driver features a 460cc head and three adjustable weight ports, the SuperDeep’s head is 435cc and it houses two adjustable weight ports. However, it does feature TaylorMade’s adjustable head design—called FCT (Flight Control Technology)—which allows golfers to unscrew the head from the shaft and then re-attach it into one of several positions to create a draw, fade, neutral upright, or neutral bias.
So overall, these two drivers are quite similar. The R9 SuperDeep was created for more accomplished players, whereas the SuperTri will provide great results for players of all abilities. The SuperDeep driver, while still fairly forgiving won’t be quite as forgiving as the 460cc SuperTri driver. The SuperTri also produces a slightly higher spin rate so again for slower swing speeds that ball will stay in the air a bit longer to provide greater distance than that of the SuperDeep.

Very happy with the TaylorMade R9 Driver....Nice looks, comfortable weight, very smooth off the face and a nice sound when hitting the ball.
The TaylorMade R9 Driver are excellent clubs at a very good price! Not only has my performance improved, I like it. Thank you for your good service!
If you are looking for a good golf set that will consistently keep your ball exactly where you want it and add 10 or so yards to your swing then id definitely recommend these. the sweet spot on the club is huge so its hard to hit the ball bad and the club seems a bit heavier than most so you basically let the club do all the work for you.
TaylorMade R9 Driver is the best club from my 20 years buying experience. I am so glad to play with them. It just likes one of my best friends. Highly recommend.
Just received today. Everything is OK. I can recommend your wesite to my friends, thanks for my TaylorMade R9 Driver!
TaylorMade R9 Driver is good for all golfers. A soft, forged carbon steel body ,this is a good one with high quality and low price.
Please tell me. do you have this driver? email me thanks.
Buyinggolfonline: of course we have, just place your order and conclude your payment.
I must admit I've always thought that adjustable driver were a bit of a harmless gimmickry by manufacturers out to take even more pennies from us. I must admit, however, that the system on the R9 driver really does work and you can see your shots changing shape as you go through the settings. That said I think I'd probably stick to the setting I was most comfortable with but then I tend to just want my driver to go straight and long. And the TaylorMade R9 certainly does that with incredible consistency. One of the best driver I've tried recently. Pricey yes, but for this level of performance you might decide it is more than worth it.
This product has a good feel. It is lightweight which makes it easier to swing through.
