Whoever said that a sequel never lives up to the original hasn't hit the Ping Rapture V2 driver. This addition - part of Ping's 2009 lineup - to the Ping line of clubs comes on the heels of the company's tremendously successful introduction in Fall 2007 of the G10 and Rapture lines.

The Ping Rapture V2 is one of the newer clubs of the season and there are not a lot of reviews on it just yet, but based on what we’ve read, this looks to be a winner! You really can’t dispute the PGA Tour’s driving leader, Bubba Watson’s, choice in clubs. How’d you like to average 313 yds per drive?  Company robotic tests reveal that V2 shots, on average, launch 1 degree higher than the original Rapture, with 500 to 600 rpm less backspin for lower overall trajectory. This results in up to 10 yards more distance. Gotta love that!

With a slightly elongated face profile and high-technology mix of titanium body with tungsten weights, the V2 capitalizes on the clubfitters' holy grail of high launch, low spin. The Rapture V2 does this with performance and style. Dual Tungsten weights do the job of keeping weight low and deep in the head, to help get the ball airborne.

PING Rapture V2 Driver: The mass properties of tungsten and titanium are optimized in the PING Rapture V2 Driver to create a high launching, lower spinning driver that delivers the performance expected from a multi-metal design. The visible, dense tungsten weight pads in the back of the lightweight titanium head expand the perimeter weighting and position the CG low and away from the face. The Rapture V2 Driver’s 460cc head is slightly elongated by extending the face height and aggressively sloping the crown. The thin face is precisely machined and plasma-welded to deliver higher ball speeds for greater distance.

The first noticeable difference from the original Rapture driver is the racy lime green color on the shaft and the soleplate. But the changes aren't merely cosmetic. In what Hollywood might call a plot twist, Ping has equipped the V2 with a super lightweight stock 939 shaft in L through X flexes. With a shaft weight of 47 grams and a 45.75-inch finished length, this makes the V2 one of the lightest and longest drivers on the market. Making a cameo in this sequel is the stock upgrade of a Mitsubishi Diamana Blueboard shaft. At 63 grams, this ultra-premium shaft lowers spin and launch for players who want a little beefier shaft than the 939.

Ping has kept the crown in the more traditional pear shape of the original Rapture - good news for those who want their 460cc disguised as a smaller headed driver.

By expanding the height of the face and elongating clubhead dimensions, Ping has enlarged the sweet spot on the clubface and provided a very hot face, providing tremendous ball velocity regardless of player skill level.

I was able to test the V2 with the stock 939 shaft. Using a Bushnell Medalist rangefinder, I could closely approximate my distances. Overall, using a Bridgestone B-330S ball for control, I found the V2 to be about 5-8 yards longer on similarly struck drives up against Ping's G10 driver. The loft on both drivers was 10.5 degrees and the flex was stiff on both.

The sound off the tee was pleasing. Not a "tink" or hollow sound, but more of a solid quality sound. I found the V2 trajectory to be a little quicker-launching through the "ideal window" about 10-20 yards off the tee. Once airborne, the V2 trajectory seemed to flatten out quicker than the G10. I attribute this to the lower spin that Ping has engineered into the club. The net result is a bit more roll once the ball hit the ground. And we can all use some more roll.

All in all, Ping engineers have captured the hot face of the G10 and the solid sound and feel of the original Rapture and put it into the V2 package.

Tony Serrano, senior design engineer: "Rapture V2 is a prime example of the advantages of combining materials to achieve a specific result. In this case, we wanted to produce a slightly different profile while optimizing launch and spin. The elongated shape allows us to position tungsten weight pads for reduced spin and a similar launch angle to the original Rapture."

How it works: Rapture V2 redirects approximately 20 grams of discretionary weight from the lightweight crown to rear external pads (made of tungsten) and internal weights along the sole. This pulls the club's center of gravity (CG) lower and more rearward than in the original Rapture. Company robot tests reveal that V2 shots, on average, launch 1 degree higher with 500 to 600 rpm less backspin for lower overall trajectory. The payoff can be up to 10 yards more distance. In addition, Ping's machined "variable thickness" face leads to longer drives while MOI measures 6 percent higher (heel-to-toe and crown-to-sole), for added head stability on slight off-center hits.

Like its predecessor, the Rapture V2 redirects 20 grams (approx.) of discretionary weight from a light crown to other areas of the clubhead. In Rapture V2, this mass is divided equally between rear external pads (made of tungsten) and internal sole weighting. This pulls the club's center of gravity (CG) lower and more rearward than in the original Rapture. Company robot tests reveal that V2 shots, on average, launch 1° higher with 500 to 600 rpm less backspin. The payoff can be as much as 10 yards more distance. Rapture V2 also has a 6% higher MOI (both heel-to-toe and crown-to-sole), for more help on mis-hits. Ping recommends that you be custom-fit to determine ideal loft, shaft and flex.

A tall face and sloped crown lower the club's CG. The by-product is a stable head that delivers high-launching, low-spinning shots. Comes in 9°, 10.5°, 12° and 13.5° lofts.

  Ok, I'm 64, hit driver around 210. Got the Ping Rapture V2 Driver the other day and took it to the driving range. Hit around 25 drives, everyone straight as a string and long. 235 to 240. Just a nice smooth easy swing. Best driver I have ever had. Also, miss hit a couple just alittle, still long and straight. One more thing, changed to a senior shaft. What a difference.

  The Ping Rapture V2 regular shaft driver is a very nice club. Great looks, sits nicely behind the ball, solid feel on all drives. A slightly lower trajectory than my King Cobra driver and is more expensive but unfortunately delivers very little extra distance.

  Great driver. The trajectory was a bit high with the stock graphite shaft, but after installing a UST V2 shaft it is great. I was using a 10.5* Taylor but changed to a Rapture V2 with 9* of loft and the ball flight is perfect.

  This is a great driver. The weight of the head and shaft combination is great. Lite shaft (63g) with the weights make if feel heavy, but swings very easy. Very low spin. Better sounding than previous Rapture.You will not be disapointed with your purchase.

  I bought this Ping Rapture club because i found a good deal on it, instead of the 500-600, it was on clearance for 200, so i tested it out and loved it. It seems not to hit as far as my older criver but i can hit it straighter then ever which might make up for my distance loss on my slice.
